"Tetrapod (four-limbed vertebrate) body forms are homologous, with bilateral skeletal frames that are ubiquitous to this superclass. Birds, amphibians even dinosaurs share a body plan essentially identical to our own. All the large mammals - the whale, bear, elephant, have massive forms that parallel our own and trigger a somatic empathy within us. The articulation of thorax to abdomen, shoulders, and pelvis is familiar, I feel it in my body. Our human anthropomorphizing of animals is evidence of our need to rationalize the connection we have with them. This association, or recognition, is a signifier for empathic concern, not just regarding our global destruction of species and environment, but to ourselves, to each other."
